As a matter of fact, in reading your entry I recognize several points I made to friends of mine in defense of man I chosen to date, or rather NOT to date.

I consider myself a feminist. I think there should be equality for genders, races, sexuality. By "equality" I mean we should do equal shares of the work. In my esteem, it is not just men who have become "namby pamby"; we are all guilty. Men can "soften" if it is a compassionate, empathetic softening, just as women can "harden" if it is a productive, fearless hardening. But we cannot become simply lazy and apathetic together. Such a sort of "equality" is not worth protecting. I think we agree there.

When you say of your grandparents' experiences that "[t]hese are the rough and tumble makings of humble, hard-working and grateful individuals. The kind of productive and patriotic folk who to this day give more often than they receive and donate as much of their time to charitable causes both necessary and artistic," I agree entirely. Well said, ma'am!

I very much enjoy reading your thoughts, Whit :-)Adwellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15674914627011822889noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8444674393027690239.post-50391584450839048982009-09-29T09:03:06.125-04:002009-09-29T09:03:06.125-04:00dude, erin love, are you going to the University o...dude, erin love, are you going to the University of Dallas?! I realize that there are teachers who fail to do their jobs; however, court rulings that favor parents/children involved in frivolous lawsuits filed against effective teachers force us to join unions to protect our careers.

For example, consider my job as a journalism adviser. Should a parent, or worse yet -- a group of parents, feel that content in one of our publications is too controversial because it deals with something distasteful to them (for example homosexuality or sexually transmitted disease), they can choose to sue me personally.

As I don't have the financial means to defend myself, it proves necessary that I have a union to pay the court costs of such a fiasco.

I also do not agree that teachers are the problem with the educational system; parents are. Public educators are expected to raise children rather than educate them. We are expected to discipline and mentor, but are not given adequate support to do either because our districts are more fearful of lawsuits than are teachers.

When a teacher is told s/he is required to meet a specific percentage of passing students or face reprimand, educational standards deteriorate. Students grow cognizant that if the majority of the class refuses to do their homework, they cannot be held accountable.

The idea that many teachers "sit around all day playing Scrabble, surfing the Internet or just staring at the wall, if that's what they want to do" undermines our ability to be successful mentors or disciplinarians. And I have never in my experience known a teacher who received pay while undergoing investigation. I have never seen nor heard of one of the so-called "rubber rooms." And, in teaching, the generalized term "insubordination" often means you have not properly aligned yourself with administration by playing into petty political charades.

This attitude feeds the public opinion that teachers are lazy and undeserving of respect. This perception is why some parents develop the idea that the teacher is "out to get" their child; therefore, the parent does not issue discipline for school-related problems, be they academic or behavioral.

Our society has taught children that they have no need to strive to do their best because they will not be held accountable. They have learned that they will face no consequences at school because the schools fear their parents, and they will face no consequences at home because their parents don't respect the schools.

The problem is much bigger than teacher unions. Teachers cannot correct such universal issues without the protection afforded by unions until the judicial system stops undermining classroom efforts by awarding huge sums of money to parents who file ridiculous lawsuits against public educators.Adwellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15674914627011822889noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8444674393027690239.post-57442341505268484882009-06-26T11:10:06.914-04:002009-06-26T11:10:06.914-04:00Hey, Whitney! If your skin gets tan then that means you work in the fields. If you keep your skin as light as possible it shows that you don't have to go outside. Also, with the dark hair their heads get really hot really quickily from the bright sun. I've been called crazy many times though for wanting to have tan skin. Many places actually have whitening salons like we go to tanning salons and most of their shampoo has herbal hair darkening agents. Status and beauty--universal drivers for behaviour.Lexhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11017685605997285310noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8444674393027690239.post-15525784868343208082009-05-12T08:56:00.000-04:002009-05-12T08:56:00.000-04:00Thanks for admitting that her bias is overwhelming...Thanks for admitting that her bias is overwhelming. That being said, I don't believe the solution she briefly espouses at the end should be forced upon corporations and individuals. People will lose their jobs and prices will rise.
